| Additional StudiesTechnology
Premier students have access to laptop computers in their classroom, and a computer lab. Students have the opportunity to use technology to support their English, math, and Mandarin studies. Teachers utilize technology to provide interactive media presentations in their instructions. Visual and Performing Arts In addition to the core subject areas, PILA's weekly schedule for all students includes instruction in the fine arts. All students participate in a weekly music class based on the Kodaly method, choral singing, and note reading. In the 2nd grade, students learn the recorder. Art class includes a Sketchbook Program, where students learn the basic elements in drawing and sketching, and The Master Artist Program, in which students learn about the life, artistic techniques, and famous paintings of famous artists (Renoir, Van Gogh, Rodin, and Georgia O’Keefe). Students also have the opportunity to learn about and make multi-cultural art from around the world. Spanish as a Foreign Language In the 4th grade, PILA students will begin their 3rd language. All students will have a weekly Spanish class with a qualified, native Spanish speaking teacher as part of the regular day school curriculum. Physical Education/Gardening At PILA, we attend to the body and spirit, as well as the mind. In our physical education program, we emphasize a healthy lifestyle, motor skills development, and collaboration through team sports. Students, also, have weekly opportunities to engage with nature through gardening activities. Emotional Intelligence Lastly, we engage all students in learning how to cultivate emotional intelligence. The school culture and teaching styles are aimed at promoting an understanding of positive behavior habits. Through various community-building activities, discussions, and school-wide donation projects, students have weekly opportunities to learn and practice emotional intelligence. At PILA, we, also, use the PeaceBuilder program to address collaboration, positive language, and building healthy relationships throughout our school community. |
